Hello, thank you for visiting this petition.

My name is Papa Kojo, I am a LGBTIQ rights activist living and working in Ghana. I work to document and curate LGBTIQ elders and history in Ghana and West Africa.

On January 14, 2024, an alleged gay man was publicly beaten at Kwapong hall, a student residence within the University of Ghana campus. This event is believed to have taken place between 11 am to 3pm and in videos circulating online, the alleged gay man is recorded naked weeping and begging for his life. Here is a link to the videos (https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1-6N_FudANr...).

This is an affront to human dignity and decency and no one (student or not) regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity should experience. I would also like to point out that citizens in Ghana are increasingly becoming homophobic and harming people perceived to be members of the LGBTIQ community. This impunity has been associated to the systemically endorsed homophobia where perpetrators of harm are often protected without any punishment or justice for victims.

By signing this petition, I hope that we can use our collective voice to draw the attention of the University Ghana and its partner institutions to engage with the LGBTIQ community to:

1. Appoint an independent investigator approved by all stakeholders to investigate this issue.

2. Release a new public statement based on independent and certified investigation that does not solely platform hearsay from perpetrators of abuse.

3. Suspend or rusticate with immediate effect any student believed to have had a hand in this as they pose an imminent danger to other Ghanaian and international students who are open or perceived members of the LGBTIQ community
