The Canadian Sociological Association is alarmed and saddened by the news of violent and misogynistic threats against feminist faculty and students affiliated with and teaching in the Women and Gender Studies Institute and the Department of Sociology at the University of Toronto.
Such threats are unacceptable in an open and democratic society and fly in the face of the pursuit of knowledge. Differences in perspective should be met with debate and reason, not violence.
The Canadian Sociological Association stands in full solidarity with the students and faculty of the Women and Gender Studies Institute and the Department of Sociology at the University of Toronto.

Seeing this level of support reminds me that so many people are unwilling to look away from these threats. I truly did not imagine that this would resonate with so many of you. This momentum belongs entirely to the community that keeps showing up.

This is 2015, time to accept equity between genders as well as races, classes, ethnicities, sexual orientations and so on. As sociologists and as human beings we should be moving in this direction if we want to make this place a better world to live in for ourselves and for the future of humankind.
I regularly teach Sociology of Gender to large undergraduate classes. My students and I will not be intimidated by misogynists.
I strongly support the research and efforts of sociologists, who work to understand our society and provide fairness for all, regardless of gender, race or personal beliefs.

These people making threats are cruel and dark. However, we cannot give into the fear. These people can't create real change by themselves so they resort to terrorizing others. We should all try and remain calm and resilient. If we cancel the class we will be playing into their game. We cannot be consumed by the fear and darkness that they live in. UBC has your back.

There is no justification for threats made against the faculty and students of this or any department.
