ENGLISH / ESPANOL ------------------------------------------- Miami, Florida May 4, 2009 First Lady Michelle Obama The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW Washington, DC 20500 Dear First Lady: We are contacting you today on behalf of the thousands of American children that are undergoing hardships due to the effects immigration raids and deportations are having on them. Thousands of children have been separated from their parents, and as their families have been abruptly taken apart, so have their emotional and economic stability. These children are facing major emotional, psychological and economic crises that are stealing away the beauty and magic of their childhood as their civil rights are violated. These children are U.S. Citizens by birth and are supposed to enjoy the same rights delineated by the Constitution in the 14th Amendment. However, this is not the case since the U.S. government did not take into account the protection of the rights of its most vulnerable citizens, when it implemented and started carrying out immigration policies that deprive these children of some basic needs and rights without providing any form of relief. American Fraternity knows first-hand the struggles of these children, as we see how they are paying the consequences of failed immigration policy. As an organization we do the best we can to bring some sort of relief and help to these children on a daily basis as we fight to protect their rights as citizens of this nation. Some of them have lost everything and can’t even afford to buy uniforms for school. They need the attention of doctors, social workers, therapists and psychologists to help cope with their situation since many of them feel guilty and paranoid in the absence of their parents. Many of these children have been placed in the foster care system and sent to alternate homes since their primary nurturing figures can no longer be present to provide love and support for them. We are asking you to please help these thousands of U.S. Citizens get their civil rights back. They have not committed any crime for them to be deprived of their right to have a family in their homeland and enjoy the same liberties any other American child can enjoy. Nowhere does the Constitution mention the nationality of parents or ancestors as legal grounds to deprive a Citizen of his/her civil rights. The pain and irreparable damages these children are being put through by immigration policy are a direct violation of their rights. It is in the best interest of this government and this nation to protect the rights of its most vulnerable citizens. After all, the future of this - the most powerful nation in the world - belongs to them and we can’t expect a bright future when their childhood is being tainted by injustice and suffering. Miles de niños han sido separados de sus padres, y a la misma vez que sus familias son destruidas, tambien lo son su estabilidad emocional y economica. Estos niños estan enfrentando grandes crisis emocionales, psicologicas y economicas que les estan robando la magia y la belleza de su niñez a la misma vez que sus derechos civiles son violados. Estos niños son Ciudadanos Americanos de nacimiento y deberian poder disfrutar los mismos derechos delineados en la 14 Enmienda a la Constitucion.. Sin embargo este no es su caso, ya que el gobierno de los Estados Unidos no tomo en cuenta la proteccion de los derechos de sus mas vulnerables ciudadanos al crear y llevar a cabo leyes de inmigración que privan a estos niños de muchas de sus necesidades y derechos mas basicos sin proveer ninguna forma de alivio. American Fraternity conoce por experiencia propia la lucha de estos niños ya que nosotros vemos como estos inocentes pagan las consecuencias de fallidas leyes migratorias. Como organización nosotros hacemos el mayor esfuerzo para traer algun alivio y ayuda a estos niños a diario a la misma vez que luchamos por proteger sus derechos como ciudadanos de esta nacion. Algunos de ellos lo han perdido todo y nisiquiera tienen para comprar utiles escolares. Ellos necesitan la atención de doctores, trabajadores sociales, terapeutas y psicologos para poder sobrellevar su situación ya que muchos se sienten culpables y aun paranoicos en la ausencia de sus padres. Muchos de estos niños han sido ingresados en el sistema de cuidado de crianza (conocido como Foster Care en Ingles) y enviados a hogares alternos ya que sus principales fuentes de afecto ya no pueden estar presentes para brindarles su amor y su apoyo. Nosotros tan solo le estamos pidiendo que por favor ayude a estos miles de Ciudadanos Americanos a obtener sus derechos civiles de vuelta. Ellos no han cometido ningun crimen para ser privados de su derecho a tener una familia en la tierra que los vio nacer y disfrutar las mismas libertades y derechos que cualquier otro niño ciudadano Americano. La Constitución no menciona en ninguna parte la nacionalidad de padres o ancestros como terreno legal para negar a un Ciudadano sus derechos civiles. El dolor y los daños irreparables causados a estos niños por las leyes de inmigracion son una violacion directa de sus derechos civiles. Esta en el mayor interes de este gobierno y esta nacion el proteger los derechos de sus mas vulnerables ciudadanos. Después de todo, el futuro de esta –la nacion mas poderosa del mundo – les pertenece a ellos y no podemos esperar un futuro brillante cuando su niñez esta siendo manchada por sufrimiento e injusticia. Le agradecemos de antemano por su tiempo y consideración. Nosotros tan solo le estamos pidiendo que usted le haga saber a Washington que estos inocentes y vulnerables ciudadanos necesitan sus derechos civiles devuelta desesperadamente.
