Change Whistler E-bike laws
Did you know that most Rad Power e-bikes are illegal to ride on any roads and on the valley trail?
Because of their wattage, speed, and throttle, they are classified as "motorized vehicles" with no way to make them road legal. The penalty of riding on roads with a none legal bike is up to $2000 in fines and a possibility to impound the bike. The RCMP normally don't enforce the e-bike laws, but it is becoming more common. i have been told that I cant ride my bike on any road or trail in whistler and have been warned about a fine.
I do understand how it can be a problem on valley trails for people speeding with it being hard to enforce a speed limit. But most of these e-bikes can keep up on roads or ride on the side. Then there is the other topic that you have to be 16 yo to ride class 2 e-bikes and 14 yo to ride "light" e-bikes. I believe that teens having e-bikes is a good thing because they can get places before they have a driver license and it gives them freedom without needing public transport or a parent to drive them everywhere, especially for kids that don't have a bus in their area to get to school and other events.
This petition is not just focused for teens, there's also all the parents biking their kids to school with class 2 e-bikes on valley trails and adults commuting.
The end goal is to take the signatures to City Hall: To change the laws concerning e-bikes in Whistler.
