Building a skatepark in West Medford is an incredible opportunity to strengthen our community, providing a safe, inclusive space for people of all ages to gather, exercise, and express themselves. Skateparks promote physical fitness and creativity, offering a healthy outlet for energy that benefits both mental and physical health. They foster a sense of belonging, giving young people a place to connect, build friendships, and develop confidence in a supportive environment. Let’s come together to make this vision a reality!

Ben Barkan, a Medford resident with experience in skatepark construction and sustainable landscaping, hopes to help build a public skatepark with integrated trees, shrubs, flowers, and sustainable drainage. The aim is to create a sculptural skatepark that is beautiful as well as functional. The proposed location for this park is in a tucked away corner of Playstead Park, Dugger park, or another nearby suitable and harmonious location.

Skateboarding is a nexus of culture, combining an inexpensive outdoor activity with a subculture that includes art and music. A skatepark can be the perfect hub for this essential expression.

Spent a few years driving my son and his friends to Lincoln Park in Somerville because they had no place to go with their skate boards in Medford. A permanent skate park would be awesome, but I would also love to see us get some equipment to make mini pop up skate parks in the summer. It doesn't have to be a huge capital outlay.

I a skatepark to offer free youth activity and to foster community. As a rock climber, bouldering offers a similar environment, but rock climbing gym’s are not free and can pose a financial barrier. Let this be an accessible space for people to gather, grow, and support each other.

As a West Medford resident and a skater during my adolescent years, I think about how much fun I used to have cruising around town (getting kicked out of everywhere). A skate park not only consolidates the skaters, but creates a community within a community.

I didn’t have skateparks growing up in Boston and Brookline It was illegal for us to skate on the streets and we were running from the police the whole time we were trying to practice our sport. Make it so the next generation has a place to be safe and learn and grow

As the manager of JRA Cycles on Salem street I think this would be a huge win for the city. We service so many bikes for the youth of the city. Giving them a safe place to hang out and ride their bikes with friends would be a massive improvement for the city.
