The purpose of this petition is to investigate the teaching methodology of Dr.Kyu-Jung Kim, and bring justice to those who received inadequate grading due to vague assignments, rushed lectures, and failure to respond to questions in class or during office hours. We the Mechanical Engineering students at California State Polytechnic University Pomona, Want our voices to be heard. Whether you are about to graduate, a newly admitted student, or you are about to apply for admission here, this matter will affect you for sure. We would like the Mechanical Engineering department to understand and hear our concerns. Many of us have suffered during the fall quarter 2016 in the Machine Design course ME325/L by Dr.Kyu-Jung Kim. I and others have struggled to understand the material, because it is not presented in a clear, concise manner. Dr. Kim’s ineffective teaching style involved the use of PowerPoint presentations that he skipped through so quickly, and in many cases refused to go back to previous slides that he went over.

He repeatedly refused to clarify issues while lecturing, and always made fun of students who ask questions during lecture. He does not like or care for his job, and he clearly has no interest in helping his students to learn and become good engineers. Additionally, he does not pass back exams for students to learn from their mistakes. For these reasons, many students have performed poorly on exams, which make it very unlikely to pass the class.Since this class is offered only by Dr.Kyu-Jung Kim, the likelihood of being held back a whole year and prolonging graduation for seniors is very likely. This jeopardizes potential graduates’ chances at securing careers in the mechanical engineering positions immediately after their senior year, pushing them farther into debt rather than bringing them out of it. Companies simply will not hire full time engineers until the student receives their degree.Dr.Kyu-Jung Kim graded all students unfairly and his attitude towards students is incredibly unprofessional and gives California State Polytechnic University Pomona a really bad reputation. The students are here to learn and represent their university when they make it to industry, however killing a student’s GPA and putting them through hell isn't the best approach of learning. For all of the reasons listed above, myself, as well as the students who have signed this petition wish to see an investigation into how this class could be taught in a more effective way, and we request that the following demands to be taken seriously.

1- We the Cal Poly Pomona Students demand to Stop the monopoly of Dr Kim teaching this course alone by having the Mechanical Engineering Department offer different professors to teach it as well. Students should have options to choose from a variety of professors.

2- We the Cal Poly Pomona Students demand to consider the project to count as 40% of the full class grade as it took more effort and time than the remaining parts of the course.

3- We the Cal Poly Pomona Students demand that the midterm and final exams be re-graded by a different professor.

4- We the Cal Poly Pomona Students demand that students who received 50% overall grade to pass as promised by Dr Kim after the regrading and restructuring of the course points.

We have attempted to contact the ME department and we were told that Dr. Shih is on sick leave ( We wish her a speedy recovery ), however Dr. Henry Xue is in charge of the department.
