Defend Democracy at UWE
We the undersigned believe that:The disqualification of Paddy Besiris from the NUS Delegate election was an underhand and unjustified move. It is part of the broader problem wherein the University of the West of England Students Union has become stagnant and corrupt. Union full time staff manipulate the rules to hound and suppress activists on campus as they engage in their democratic right to work for a better university. The trend in the past year of selectivily and unfairly attacking both students and staff is anti-democratic and damaging to the student experience. This all comes at a time when government cuts and university restructuring is damaging access to education and threatening the quality and breadth of courses offered. In addition to this, the invasion of student's personal facebook to demonise the students by proxy is an invasion of privacy. This is a direction which the AGM, the sovereign body of the students, made clear was unacceptable yet the students union bureaucracy is intent of pursueing htis course. No more wasted votes. No more stifled voices of the student body. The Student Union has brought itself into disrepute. We demand that Paddy Besiris be reinstated as nominee and an open and fair election for the NUS delegate be held.
