We, the undersigned, request that the Township of Denville, New Jersey amend its ordinances to allow residents to possess three hens for every one-tenth of an acre in all zones of Denville without license or fee. We acknowledge that backyard chicken keeping is a growing hobby in America and one that teaches children in various organizations, such as 4H, responsibility. We likewise attest that chickens, specifically, hens, are not noisy, odorous, diseased, or a nuisance when properly maintained just as any other pet and that chickens do not attract more predators; rather some breeds contribute to keeping backyards free of stink bugs, ticks, mice, and other unwanted pests. We feel this is necessary for the sustainability of our community, green living, education, children's activities and local food supply. This step will contribute to Morris County sustainability and have Denville join the many New Jersey towns friendly to backyard chickens.

Updates

May 23, 2014

The Denville Township Council can no longer ignore this movement. We have built enough momentum to force a real conversation about these archaic restrictions.

I live in Denville and would love for to be allowed to have chickens as pets. I have 1.6 acres and also believe they could help with ticks, Japanese beetles and other pests as well. It is a great experience for kids to understand and learn about a self sustaining lifestyle. Why should those with more than 5 acres have that privilege?

There is no harm in this fowl. Properly kept chickens are less of a nuisance or prey-magnet than many neighbors garbage cans and yards.

I live in Denville and would love to own a few chickens, fresh eggs are the best. We have rabbits, I keep the hutches clean and have never had a problem with rodents or predators.

Raising chickens is green and sustainable, don't we want to be supporting this as a town? I'd love to be able to raise chickens. I could understand a no-roosters limitation, however.

I totally support having chickens! There are so many towns that allow chickens, why doesn't Denville? We should all be moving toward growing at least some of our food, edible landscaping and getting in touch with nature. All great experiences for children - and adults too!

I am saddened and embarrassed to live in a town that would persecute a family for keeping 3 hens as pets. I appeal to the local governing authorities to please re-evaluate the existing legislation and to apply some basic common sense to modify said legislation to permit these pets to remain on the premises.

Chickens that are properly kept are no nuisance whatsoever. Check out hencam.com for a wonderful example of how someone can keep backyard chickens problem free. Denville should allow its residents to keep chickens in their yards.
