Discontinue “Next Stop” Announcements (OBAV) on MTA Buses

The new audio announcement system (part of the On-Board Audio Video [OBAV] technology) that alerts riders of all stops on MTA buses is a disaster. Bus routes in NYC often have stops every 2 to 5 blocks. At each stop, the OBAV system makes an announcement indicating the stop name, the available transfers and the next stop. The loudspeaker system is quite loud and the announcements seem to never end. This is extremely irritating, not only for riders but for bus drivers as well; many have complained that it makes them insane to hear it all day. There really is not much benefit to the audio announcements. Buses that use the new system also have multiple video monitors on board that display the same information, which should be sufficient. The only exception is convenience for the blind, but the number of blind, daily riders is minimal and the masses shouldn’t have to suffer for the very few. All signers of this petition request that the MTA discontinue the audio announcement system so that we can commute in peace and quiet.
