Divesting Santa Clara
You may be aware that the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere has recently reached 400 ppm, a worrisome landmark in the progression of climate change. We believe that the issue of climate changes contains very relevant connections to the Jesuit tradition of social justice. The populations most likely to be affected by climate change are the poor of underdeveloped countries such as Bangladesh. Because of the dire implications of climate change, we are interested in whether or not Santa Clara University invests in companies that sell, produce or refine fossil fuels. One of Santa Clara’s main missions is to nurture the ethical core of students, future leaders of our society. If Santa Clara invests in the fossil fuel industry, an industry which drives the forces of climate change, it sets an example for its students. We would like Santa Clara to disclose information regarding its investments in the fossil fuel industry. .
