Draft Kai Newkirk for U.S. Senate 2018
Dear Kai,
Last week, millions of Americans took a collective sigh of relief, after yet another failed attempt from the GOP to repeal and replace Obamacare. While hundreds of thousands of citizens made calls, emailed, or contacted their elected representatives to voice their opposition to dismantle the ACA, others went even further-by sitting in elected officials D.C. offices. This spread to the media quickly, and as the live footage unfolded in the capital building, there you were, stepping in and speaking out against the harmful and malicious trumpcare bill. We weren't surprised. Your longstanding activism and contributions to the current movement by leading, training and backing others, all began well before 45 and his administration took office. Time after time you have tirelessly organized on the ground, working directly with others in the movement, making consistent efforts to improve the lives of others by demanding equality and social justice. The list of your efforts do not go unnoticed-whether it was your arrest opposing the nomination of attorney general Jeff Sessions, or participating in the March to Harrisburg to send the message to overturn Citizens United and demand an end to gerrymandering.
You have been the calm and tenacious leader of Democracy Spring. Continued contributions to the movement of nonviolent direct action is necessary. It is necessary to ensure the people's' rights are not being violated, and if they are, to bring them to light and to bring justice. This is undoubtedly critical work, and while some may want you to "stay in this lane", you have a number of backers and supporters who would prefer to see a new trend in Washington and in our country. The current political strategies from the Democratic Party have not been successful come election day. Constituents want leaders in the house and senate whose actions align with their convictions and who don't throw out a myriad of prefabricated political statements and promises, rather straight shooters whose words are consistently backed by their actions. By frequently putting yourself on the line for the sake of all, advocating and fighting for our civil liberties using non-violent direct actions, you bring an energy that is so desperately missing in our current political climate. We believe you have the humility, fortitude, and steadfast voice to led this energized base of progressives forward in a new role, as a member of the U.S. senate. So, it is with great respect and appreciation we step forward and strongly urge you to consider a run for U.S. Senate in 2018.
Respectfully submitted,
