Petition for Fairness in Dress Code Enforcement at DCPS

We, the undersigned students of Duval County Public Schools (DCPS), are petitioning for fair and humane treatment regarding the enforcement of the dress code policy, specifically concerning the wearing of hoodies during cold weather conditions.

It has come to our attention that while teachers, staff, and administrators are permitted to wear hoodies in temperatures as low as 30 degrees Fahrenheit, students are unfairly prohibited from doing so. This discrepancy in enforcement creates discomfort and health risks for students during cold weather.

Furthermore, we acknowledge that not all DCPS schools enforce this policy equally. Reports from students at other DCPS schools indicate that some allow students to wear hoodies without issue. However, First Coast High School stands out as one of the schools heavily enforcing this inhumane treatment.

Our goal is not to fully overturn the hoodie ban but to request a reasonable adjustment during cold weather conditions. We propose a compromise that allows students to wear hoodies in classrooms while ensuring hoods are kept down during instructional time.

Our motto at DCPS is "DCPS is inhumane," and we emphasize that we are not asking for total leniency but for compassion and practicality in enforcing the dress code. It is crucial to note that this petition is not intended to be blackmail. However, we feel obligated to highlight concerns that may otherwise go unnoticed.

We are particularly concerned about recent incidents involving security coach Bryant at First Coast High School, where a student (His name not going to be made public) were reportedly required to pay money to retrieve confiscated items such as vapes. This raises serious ethical questions about how discipline and policy enforcement are handled at our school.

We urge the DCPS administration to reconsider and revise the hoodie policy to reflect fairness and respect for student well-being, especially during extreme weather conditions.
