LANDMARK THEM
Landmark Them I understand the following: 1. that the Landmarks Commission staff has identified 15 single family homes that could be included in a landmark district in northeast Edgewater along Kenmore, Winthrop, and Sheridan Road north of Hollywood and that the Edgewater Historical Society has recommended to the Landmarks Commission the inclusion of three additional homes; 2. that whether the suggested landmark district is created depends on whether Alderman Mary Ann Smith wants it to happen; 3. that Alderman Mary Ann Smith has indicated that she will defer to the wishes of her Zoning and Planning Committee whether she should pursue landmark designation of these homes; 4. that the homes in question represent almost all of the remaining single family homes in the original development of Edgewater by its founder John L. Cochran; and 5. that since 2002, 18 homes have been torn down in East Edgewater, of which 8 were signicant I strongly support the creation of a landmark district that would protect these homes from destruction of disfigurement. They are part of our special heritage, and many are public works of art designed by noted Chicago architects. I urge the Alderman and the community to support landmarking to preserve them for future generations.
