The legislature finally backed down and House Bill 7084 is dead. We forced them to listen to the people who actually work in these restaurants instead of pushing their reckless agenda. Stay sharp because these politicians will keep looking for ways to cut our earnings if we stop paying attention.

CT Legislature: don’t slash my earnings!

The Proposal

Some elected officials in the CT Legislature want to eliminate CT’s tip credit. The tip credit is a federal and state law which allows restaurant employers to take a credit on the wages paid to employees who regularly receive gratuities.

The Response

CT restaurant employers can choose to ban tipping altogether in their restaurants and replace it with a service charge. A service charge can be distributed amongst all restaurant employees at any amount, or not at all. Servers and bartenders could then be paid minimum wage and not receive tips at all.

The Plan

Restaurant operators and tipped employees need to work together to educate legislators and let them know that the tip credit works for servers, bartenders and operators.

How to Help

Click here to sign an on-line petition to tell elected officials not to cut your earnings! Please feel free to pass along to other restaurant employees to oppose House Bill 7084! In your message please write in what restaurant/bar you work in and how this bill will affect you. Thank you!

The legislators behind House Bill 7084 are ignoring the reality of our paychecks while they push this disastrous policy. I am currently compiling your personal stories about the restaurants where you work to shove under their noses at the next hearing. They think they can restructure our industry without consequences but we are going to make it impossible for them to look away.

Tips are how servers and bartenders live. They are not offered any other benefits and pay out of pocket for health insurance ,etc. I worked my way through school as a waitress and if it wasn't for the tips I worked so hard fkr, I wouldn't have been able to attend school.

I was a single mom and managed to survive because I waitressed for over 20 years. I also put myself through college because of the flexibility in hours that I could work. This will put the economy in a worse situation than it is now, it'll put restaurants out of business and so forth.

These tips are our income. It's like someone taking away your very hard earned weekly, or biweekly pay and giving you $9 an hour. No one can live off of that. Please don't do this and put more people, and families on the streets

I work at Trumbull Kitchen in Hartford. If servers and bartenders don't get tipped, or end up with minimum wage, I truly believe the quality service we give will be greatly compromised. We get tipped because we work hard and we care.

I'm not sure why you have to change something that works fine as is. Lots of people will no longer be working in the restaurant service industry if you take away their incentive to work. They should be rewarded for their individual hard work. I tip the person, not the establishment.

Please don't pass this bill. Service industry professionals have developed skills and knowledge of food and wine over many years. Tipping maintains a quality workforce. Doing away with tipping will most certainly reduce the amount of skilled service professionals in the workforce.

This is awful. I put myself thru nursing school by waitressing and earning great tips.
