End Unlawful Illinois FOID Card Delays
In Illinois, a person who wishes to purchase, transfer, or possess a firearm needs to have a valid Firearms Owner Identification (FOID) card. The law (430 ILCS 65/5), requires that the Illinois State Police (ISP) issue a FOID to qualified individuals within 30 days, however the ISP routinely take much longer than the law allows. This wrongful delay prevents law abiding citizens from being able to purchase a gun for purposes such as self defense. Furthermore, delays in the renewal of a FOID can convert a law abiding citizen into a felon, as someone who owns guns already cannot continue to possess them once their FOID has expired. The failure of the ISP to follow the law and issue FOID cards on time needs to be dealt with by our elected officials, to whom this petition will be sent.
