Fire Brian Kelly
It is time for Notre Dame to move on from Brian Kelly. Brian Kelly has been the head coach at Notre Dame for already 7 years. That is the 5th longest tenure as a Notre Dame head coach with only Knute Rockne, Ara Parseghian, Lou Holtz, and Frank Leahy. In terms of accomplishments and progress made under these coaches Brian Kelly’s name should not be mentioned in the same sentence as these all time coaching greats. When he was hired, Notre Dame football was at an all-time low. For this reason, in his first couple years he was given the benefit of the doubt for lack of progress and accomplishments. Now, 7 years later, 0 national championships, 0 bowl wins of any meaning, 5 straight losses when Notre Dame is playing in the game when “Gameday” comes. As of right now he is 14-15 against ranked opponents. Additionally, lack of talent has not been an issue. 33 players that have played under kelly are in the NFL including 7 first round picks. Yet nothing to show for it. Many Brian Kelly supporters attribute the 2017 season as a success due to the 2016 disaster of a 4-8 record. Here’s why this is wrong. The 4-8 season should never have happened. You have an all world offensive line, a quarterback who is starting in the NFL, and a ton of young talent. And the 2017 year was not that much of a success either. Notre Dame finished 9-3. With all three of their losses coming in primetime and were all cases where Brian was completely outcoached. This was the year for the Irish. A former 5-star quarterback, the best line coach kelly has had, a heisman caliber running back, tons of talent at WR and TE, and a very experienced defense. Yet little to nothing will show for all of this talent and at one point being ranked 3. It is time for Notre Dame to restart and try something new. What do they have to lose? The team is losing many key players to the draft and with the exception of kelly, the rest of the coaching staff is young and ready for a change.
