The frequency with which the Hicks building lifts are out of order is not acceptable for users of the building. Over the past few months there has been barely a day when all the lifts are functioning and there have also been instances where individuals have become trapped in them during failure.

We call on the university to take proper action to fix them.

Momentum is building fast. The university cannot ignore this volume of frustration for much longer.

Open days to attract the next cohort of mathematics students begin next week. Our visiting students first impression of the university will be the broken lifts and a steep ascent up seven flights of stairs to K-floor. The consequence of this poor first impression could have significant financial repercussions for us. I was also trapped in the lift for approximately fifteen minutes two weeks ago.

Prospective students and parents at Open Days will judge Sheffield on first appearances. Broken lifts appear to suggest that we don't care about students, particularly those with disabilities - which is far from the case! Fixing them should be the highest priority.

I've returned to work this morning after suffering a foot injury - both foyer lifts were out of action - thank goodness the goods lift was still operating or I would have had to do a U-turn and go home!

YES PLEASE! Got stuck waiting for a lift 3 times today and each time the guy at reception just goes "oh it's not working again".

We need to find an efficient way to liaise with estates for fixing problems and for monitoring other work done in Hicks. There used to be a fabric committee-- maybe it is time to reinstate it.

I failed to mention in my last post that our Departmental Open Days start on Wednesday 27 November and take place each Wednesday and Friday throughout November, December, February and March. We really need Estates help to keep our lifts working. Do I have to send twice weekly e-mails to Estates with a list of complaints from the visitors to the Open Days before anything is done? I really do hope not.

It would be nice to have some operational lifts for over 10 floors!
