This petition calls for David Meikle to resist calls for his resignation from his position as Elected Local Councillor with Glasgow City Council representing the Ward of Pollokshields.
The raising of the Palestinian flag was taken without consulting council members or the Citizens of Glasgow. Rather than Mr Meikle's actions being insensitive, as has been claimed, we believe that the raising of the Israeli flag offered a reminder that a balanced view must be taken in any assessment of what is a complicated conflict.
The decision of the Lord Provost of Glasgow to raise the Palestinian flag on it's own, as a call for piece is naive. A much stronger statement is made by both flags being displayed.
The benefit of living in Great Britiain, in one of the finest examples of democracy, is that we have the right to free speech and to protest. By calling on Mr Meikles resignation this right to freedom of speech is being challenged. His actions we not to incite hatred and crossed no legal or moral boundaries.
The petition asking for his resignation claims he "clearly attempted to bring shame on our city". This is not the case and Mr Meikle took his actions with only positive intent. In a war there are tragedies and on all sides. We are proud that both flags were on show and that Mr Meikle had the courage to make a statement for peace.
