Graduation Gowns
We the undersigned, students (and parents) of North Attleborough High School, would like to restore the choice of wearing a white OR red graduation cap and gown. It has been a cherished tradition at North Attleborough High School that the boys wear red and the girls wear white on graduation day. We believe that all students should have a choice in what color they wear on one of the most significant days of their lives. To present each student with a choice in what color they get to wear is not discriminatory against gender identity and abides by Massachusetts Law which states that no student can be discriminated against in a public school. It is only suggested under Massachusetts Law that schools work to eliminate requirements for gender-based attire, not required. This is not a disregard towards transgender or gender nonconforming students, because all students will still have the option to make a statement by choosing the color they feel most comfortable wearing. The way that Big Red displays its school colors on graduation day sets our school apart rather than conforming to how other schools present themselves. We all have an opinion, a say, and a choice in the decisions made at our school and it is of the utmost importance that we receive our diploma in the colors red AND white!
