Let's keep teachers in San Francisco! Teachers are flooding out of San Francisco because they don't make enough to keep up with the housing market. San Francisco has overtaken even Manhattan, in housing prices. SFUSD teachers earn much less than their counterparts in cities with lower housing prices. For example, Berkeley teachers make, on average, six thousand more than SF teachers. However, Berkeley’s average rent is thirteen thousand dollars lower than San Francisco’s rent. This isn't fair for San Francisco teachers and students, who are losing all these great teachers to SF’s highly competitive housing market.

I started this because I was worried about our schools but I never imagined so many people felt the same way. The momentum we have right now belongs entirely to those of you who spoke up for our educators. It is truly humbling to see this gather so much steam.

Thank you for addressing this important issue! The fact that it's coming from students makes it even more powerful.

My son had such a great teacher leave last year because she couldnt afford rent anymore. It really hurts the kids when we lose the good ones. Fix this now.

As a career teacher in SFUSD and a lifetime resident of San Francisco, I know how hard it can be to secure decent housing. I spent my first 20 years as a young adult renting and ultimately was forced out of my rental house while teaching and raising 3 children. It became immediately apparent that I could not continue renting in San Francisco and, ironically, I was forced to buy a house in the City. Yes, it is cheaper to own than to rent in San Francisco. That is not to say that our financial problems are solved by any means. The cost of living in San Francisco is prohibitive to the majority of teachers here.

The teacher salaries make it impossible for teachers to live in the city they teach in, just from the salaries. They are forced to work multiple jobs with the the starting salary to rent an apartment here. They work hard enough already. They deserve to be paid more.

I agree that teachers should get a higher pay. Teachers doesn't get recognized enough for what they do. Teachers have an important role in our generation and teachers get payed so little.
