Stop Censorship at UC Irvine! Publish Progressive Articles!
Nathan Tumazi is a 4th year International Studies major and Biological Sciences minor at the University of California, Irvine. Tumazi is a staff writer for the UCI newspaper The New University, which has a readership of 10,000 people. Recently, a demilitarization article Tumazi wrote and submitted for publication was fundamentally attacked and ultimately censored. If you know anything about David Horowitz, he was allowed by the editors to publish an article personally attacking Tumazi's politics and calling him a "hater" and a "fascist". The New University did not consider this slander cause for denial of publication of Horowitz's article. Yet the progressive views of Tumazi and similar students on issues such as demilitarization, anti-war dissent, single-payer healthcare, and single-payer university education are systematically denied equal access to a readership. Diversity is what a college is about, not only letting the Right-Wing, such as Mr. Horowitz, have their say by calling the campus left "fascists". http://frontpagemagazine.com/Articles/Read.aspxGUID=2AF843A2-41FB-4378-90A0-0E8D1365A5C6 The following email from the editors to Tumazi announced that they were censoring what the article--despite now having sources such as The Seattle Times--had to say. "Hi Nathan, Please note that your other article about the Defense Dept. will not be published, as determined by myself, my associate, and the EIC." While we progressives recognize that the issues of freedom of speech, diversity, and equality are complex, we request that this article be given the freedom of speech and expression it merits. Corporate media on the University campus must allow all voices to be heard. This petition will be sent electronically and snail-mailed to the following editors at the University of California, Irvine on October 08, 2009.
