should this case be reopened
ELEVEN years ago, father-of-four Stephen Doherty was tragically found dead at a block of flats in Ashbourne Road, Derby.
Tests showed heroin in his blood stream and an inquest recorded an open verdict.
But his family insist he was not a hard-drug user and have ever since been trying to get to the truth over his death.
Now a police report has stated that a key witness in the case has admitted lying in the original inquiry. After originally saying Mr Doherty injected himself, the witness now says he was injected with heroin by another man in a misguided robbery attempt.
Stephen's family feel the revelations show his death should have been treated as murder but they are frustrated that police say they do not intend to reopen the case.
We firmly believe Stephen's death is a case of murder. The investigation at the time fell well short of what we would have expected.
