Keep Maunie Sandbar Road Public!
This petition has a purpose. We want to send a clear message to the federal government that we, the citizens and visitors of Maunie, Illinois oppose and reject the closure or restriction of access to the public, tax-payer funded roadway that permits access to the Maunie Sandbar.
This road has provided access to this recreational area for over a century. The federal government was involved and deemed the area a wetland and spent hundreds of thousands of tax dollars on wetland development. A levee and a pond were built and later destroyed by the flooding Wabash river.
The out-of-town outfitters/landowners have made every effort to convince the federal government that the road to the sandbar does not exist and therefore Emma Township has no claim to the easement. As we all know, that road has given access to the Wabash River for decades. There are octogenarians in our community that remember using the road when they were children.
By adding your name to this petition, you are voicing your support for keeping our road open and access to the sandbar public. The petition will be turned over to the legal representation of Emma Township for potential use during litigation to keep the road open. Your support is appreciated.
