For over a generation lecturers at Leeds Metropolitan University have built up a breadth of foreign language provision that is unparalleled outside of London. As a result of government funding cuts the university proposes to cease the teaching of Farsi, Turkish, Finnish and Hungarian and reduce its provision in Chinese, Russian, Japanese, Greek, Polish and Portuguese. If this cut is implemented then 11 lecturers will lose their jobs and lives will be shattered and a highly regarded provision will be lost to both the wider community and to trade and industry. We the undersigned call on the university to withdraw these proposals:
