There is a new 30,000 square foot skatepark at Gabe Nesbitt Community Park in Mckinney, Texas which opened on April 20, 2013. On this day, bikes were not allowed to enter the skatepark on grounds that they were a danger to other users, as well as the architecture used in the park. We've spoken to the parks and recreation department and were informed of several other false ideals that have been spread regarding bmx use at this facility. This is a public facility funded by the community, yet it segregates against bmx riders. Public parks are intended to serve the public; if BMX riders are considered a part of this public, provisions should be made to allow them use of the facility as well. Through implementation of park friendly products, scheduling, and proper education, bikes can be just as safe and useful in this new skatepark as skateboards, rollerblades, and scooters. For more information, please visit the educational article online by Bikes Belong: http://www.bikesbelong.org/resources/publications/bmx-in-skateparks/ If you think bikes belong in the McKinney skatepark, please voice your opinion by signing this petition; be sure to include your name and email, and pass this on to anyone who may feel the same.
