Concerned Citizens for the Health of Dubois County
Concerned Citizens for the Health of Dubois County hereby petition the Mayor of Jasper (William J. Schmitt), the Jasper Utility Board, and the elected city council members of Jasper to retire the old Jasper power plant, and not to sale or lease the power plant property to a company desiring to convert the power plant into a biomass/coal incinerator.
We heed the dire warning of the American Lung Association concerning biomass and air pollution in general, "Burning biomass could lead to significant increases in emissions of nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, and sulfur dioxide and have severe impacts on the health of children, older adults, and people with lung diseases." Concerned citizens are for clean and safe local energy production, and we are against the burning of waste water, waste water sludge, poultry litter, miscanthus grass, waste coal combined with 25% biomass, lower grade coal combined with biomass, or whatever other biomass/coal source the board decides upon.
No amount of financial profit for the city or utility savings is worth putting the health and quality of life of our children and community at dire risk.
