Provide Healthy School Meals for Los Gatos Schools
Members of The Board, As parents of LGUSD children, we are writing to you regarding the school meal program. We understand that you will soon be voting on possible changes to the program, and we would like to voice our concerns. Now is the time to be establishing healthy habits in our kids, and the current program is not acceptable. As you know, participation in the school lunch program is 25% to 30%. We feel that this low number reflects a level of dissatisfaction with the program as it is currently implemented. While it may meet the minimum standards required by the State, it does not meet our standards as parents. We feel strongly that school meals should reflect the healthy eating habits we are trying to instill in our kids. This includes focusing on fresh products, offering a variety of healthy choices, and eliminating hormones, artificial ingredients and preservatives such as partially hydrogenated oils and high fructose corn syrup. If the cities of New York and San Francisco have banned trans fats, why would we allow such items in our kids’ lunches Los Gatos parents place a premium on having exceptional schools, strong programs, and the best teachers. We need the best food choices as well. We understand that the price of school meals will increase as a result of making such a change, but we feel a moderate increase would be well worth the added benefit. We believe Revolution Foods is a better choice than Sodexo. Sodexo is a multinational corporation with many business units and diverse interests. To date, Sodexo has not delivered the quality we expect. Revolution Foods is a locally owned business focused entirely on delivering healthy meals to children. Revolution Foods’ proposal details how they will meet the high standards we require. Please select Revolution Foods to offer better options for the health of our children. Thank you. Sincerely,
