In response to OISE's recent decision to cut the Inner City program, we are fearful that a strong and committed focus on urban education, social justice and equity, will be watered down, or lost altogether, during the restructuring of teacher education programming at OISE. We call upon OISE to ensure:

1. that urban education be a fundamental theoretical and practical component of the new MT program;

2. that community stakeholders be consulted during all program planning phases, including input from: GTA school board representatives, the Centre for Urban Schooling, and OISE faculty and former instructors who held leadership roles in the elementary- and secondary-stream urban education cohorts;

3. that consultations and program planning with the aforementioned groups be initiated without further delay.

ICO is unique in fostering CRRP, Equity, and Social Justice in education. ICO is the counterbalance to instiutionalized disequity and socio-economic classism. It would be wilfully ignorant to presume teacher candidates are any different than the cross-section of society; removing ICO is akin to assimilation of TC's into the mainstream mindset.

It is so important that urban education, in the style of the former Inner City Option, continue to be the focus of teacher education. It is a crucial piece in preparing teachers to support students of very different backgrounds than their own, to understand the reality for all oppressed and underprivileged groups. I know from talking to students of the other options that they did not have a deep, real understanding of this reality or how they should respond to it.

Teacher candidates with a strong background in social justice and equity is crucial in this age of social upheaval. Students are coming from a wide variety of situations and perspectives that we as teachers are generally not privy to. Economic, social, cultural diversity cannot be respected by a profession if these kinds of programs are eliminated.

Equity based pedagogy is the foundation of good teaching and urban education is a fundamental focus of equity based education in Canada. Our students are faced with challenges and come with gifts that many educators know nothing about and our understanding of these perspectives is incredibly important to our effectiveness as educators and the outcomes for all of our students. Please implement these changes, there is nothing more important and talk without action will simply not be enough.

It is a known statistic that 1 in 3 child lives in poverty in Toronto, Canada. By making urban education a focus in the Master of Teaching program at OISE/UT (a place known worldwide for research and training the greatest teachers), we make it possible for educators to understand and realize the politics of inner city communities.

As an OISE- Inner City Option graduate who did a placement at an inner city school, I know that my in-class education as well as my placement has equiped me with the tools to teach in an equitable and effective manner.
