Busing for children with Autism and special needs in NYC is in a serious crisis. Some matrons do not know the proper way to communicate or supervise children on the spectrum. There are countless instances reported to the Office of Pupil Transportation of inappropriate circumstances between parent/child and matron/driver. This is all because there is no proper training in place that gives them the tools they need to perform their jobs effectively and appropriately. No two children on the spectrum are the same. These people are the first to have contact with our kids when they leave our sides in the morning. A few hours of training could make the difference to the start of a great day and a smooth and efficient ride to and from school. Please follow me in requesting a mandatory autism/special needs training class for bus matrons and bus drivers.

The stories shared in the comments regarding daily transportation experiences remind us why this training requirement is necessary. I am currently reaching out to local representatives to ensure they review these accounts and understand the urgency of the situation.

The consistent growth of this petition demonstrates a profound consensus regarding the necessity of proper training for our transportation staff. This momentum confirms that the safety and well-being of children on the spectrum must be prioritized within our school system.

I’m all for this. I’m a mother to 8 year old autistic child and his safety is very important. I pray this passes through.

My son is nonverbal autistic. His matron and bus driver asked if he could speak 2 months into the school year. Glad he has new ones, but with daily interaction and being verbally informed, how could they not know this

This type of training is necessary. I have driven students and served as an ECE teacher. What I know is our society benefits from understanding the needs and situations of all its citizens!

Keep our babies safe! They didn't ask to be born different, our babies deserve to go to school without getting beat by a bus driver!
