Neighbors of Lawton Loop,

This email is in regard to a petition that we wish you would consider signing electronically.

The Fort Harrison Reuse Authority Board is strongly considering a plan to develop the Maude building on Lawton Loop East into “market-rate” apartments. In addition, the current plan would also allow the Developer to construct a new building East (or behind) the Maude building. Over 30 apartment units are planned for the Maude building and an additional 70 units for the newly constructed building, for a total of 100 apartment units.

We are opposed to this development for several reasons:

  1. The original Master plan called for the buildings on the East side of Lawton Loop to be renovated with “luxury condos.” We want neighbors that have “bought-in” to our community and have a personal and financial interest in its upkeep and well-being. The Davis building and Lawton Loop East condos have done just that, and have been terrific neighbors. We do not want to take a chance that apartment rentals will lower our property values or bring-in residents that have no concern for the long-term vitality of the Loop.
  2. Bringing in easily 250-400 residents to the Loop as planned will double the population. This will have obvious impact on traffic, noise, and Parade Ground use.
  3. The driving force for the Reuse Board appears to be “adding rooftops.” Haven’t we seen enough apartment development to our East already?

So please consider filling-out your name and email on this electronic petition, if you are opposed to the apartment development as outlined above. You will have the option on whether your name appears on the on-line signature list. Our goal is to simply be able to say 50% or 90% of current residents oppose the apartment development plan, hopefully the latter number.

Thanks for your consideration,

The Vails, Martens, and O’Malleys
