Petition for New Leadership in the McKinleyville High School Football Program

To: McKinleyville High School Administration, Athletic Director, and School Board

We, the undersigned students, parents, alumni, and concerned members of the McKinleyville community, are united in calling for an immediate and urgent review of the McKinleyville High School football program. After much thought and at the request of many in this community, I—along with other concerned parents—am stepping forward, despite the personal risks and potential backlash, because this is not just about football; it’s about our students, our values, and our community pride.

Our concerns have been growing for years, but recent embarrassing defeats have made it clear that this program is in decline. The once-vibrant spirit of McKinleyville football has given way to frustration, low morale, and a lack of development in our student-athletes. Despite the fear of retaliation, I feel compelled to voice what so many in our community are too concerned to say openly: The time for change is now.

We respectfully demand new leadership.

The current coaching staff has had multiple seasons to show progress, yet our team’s performance continues to falter, and the integrity of the program has suffered. Specific, ongoing concerns include:

  1. Lack of player development: Over the past seasons, there has been little to no noticeable improvement in the team’s skills, strategies, or overall competitiveness. A fresh, capable coach is urgently needed to foster player growth and rebuild the team’s confidence.
  2. Poor communication and morale: Reports from both players and parents paint a troubling picture—there is a severe lack of motivation and support from the coaching staff. A toxic environment has replaced what should be a culture of unity and encouragement. A leadership change is vital to restore hope and enthusiasm in our athletes.
  3. Failure to foster a positive sports culture: Discipline, respect, and teamwork should be the foundation of any successful football program. Unfortunately, these values are not being upheld. The current leadership has not created an environment conducive to personal growth or team cohesion, leaving many of our student-athletes demoralized.
  4. Inconsistent and ineffective strategies: We have endured season after season of underperformance and disappointing losses, often with no clear explanation or adjustment in strategy. It’s painful for our students, parents, and community to watch this downward spiral continue unchecked.

We cannot remain silent any longer.

McKinleyville High School has always had the potential to cultivate a football program that inspires pride in its students and community. But that potential is being squandered. We need a coach who not only has the experience and vision to turn this program around but also embodies the values of sportsmanship, discipline, and mutual respect—someone who will build a team that reflects our community values.

We understand that change can be difficult, but the longer we wait, the more our program—and by extension, our community—suffers. We respectfully ask that the administration and school board act with urgency and transparency, taking this petition seriously for the benefit of our students, athletes, and families.

For too long, we have accepted mediocrity and poor leadership. It’s time to act before it’s too late. We call for the immediate search for a new head football coach and a comprehensive review of the entire football program's leadership. Together, we can restore the pride and potential that McKinleyville football once represented.

My Dad, Coach Cash, taught youth and high school football in McKinleyville for over 40 years. That's how you run a program! It takes ALL OF US... But even back then when he coached football, there have always been periods of time where the program sucked for various reasons! CHANGE IS INEVITABLE...ITS THE ONE CONSTANT IN LIFE! When change and growth are not happening, and in fact regretion is happening, it is our job in the community and as parents to protect our children so they can thrive! Thank you Wendy for taking the leap here, and trusting the greater good for our kids, families, and community will prevail!!! Nice play ;-)

Shame on them. Needs to be fixed and bring back the confidence, and positiveness in football. To put an effort to be number 1 never giving up win or loose. Coach is not a coach if not up lifting skills and improving a team to succeed as a team. Challenging any challenges in the way. This needs to be fixed.

We need a solid football program starting with a solid foundation. No more voluntary practices and more mandatory practices with team building events. Knowledgeable & Solid educated coaching staff! No fighting among the coaches. More school spirit to support all athletic at MHS!!

They are not good role models for youth! My kids are very good athletes at Mck and I won’t let them play football or track because of those coaches.

I have long wished this administration would vet a good coach for their football program. It is painful to watch my grandson go out their play just hoping he won’t be hurt. Due in fact that at any given time there are only 11-15 kids are all that show up to play. Yes it is time to restore some pride to this school!

I played for four years at mhs, 3 years varsity. I had Mr. Burbank as a head coach for two years, after Burbank stepped down Fel became the head coach. We need new coaching, fel is not the coach people make him seem like. The only year he has had a winning season was with my class of kids and that’s because we were a skilled and talented group of kids. Fel struggled the entire year to call plays and get our team moving in a good direction offensively. He was never open to listening to the players and taking advice from the kids. The only reason we competed was because of our DC. Deon Willis, he was the reason for keeping us in games. His coaching made my teammates and I all around better players and better men.

These coaches need to go. They do not represent leadership to guide these young men about values and teamwork. It is embarrassing for Mckinleyville High school.
