A CLARION CALL TO RECOGNIZE MICROTIA (BORN WITHOUT EARS) IN SOUTH AFRICA.
Microtia (Born without Ears) and Atresia (without Ear Canal) patients, patients with other extreme forms of ear defects and their parents seek the attention of the South African Government, through the Department of Health towards their plight,which is to provide adequate information and guide to medical solution and actual solution when this defects are noticed at birth in the South African Child.
The Give an Ear foundation (a South African based Charity, Non-Profit Organization working for the repair of Microtia and Atresia in South African Children.) has over 200 children born with Microtia in its waiting list. Give an Ear Foundation was founded in 2012 by Mrs Viola Ntokazi Nwadike, a South African woman who's son Victor (8 years old) was born with single microtia and atresia. The following excerpts described Viola's experience upon delivery of Victor in 2010;
"Then comes the doctor with a straight-face; “Oh, I think he will need plastic surgery”. My husband and I froze as we tried to comprehend the doctor’s message; at this time the joyful triggers came to halt. He (The Doctor) handed me the baby and I saw for the first time this tiny little piece of skin where there is supposed to be an ear."
"Two days later we were discharged with no counseling, no referral and no information on what to do with my boy’s situation. The lack of information from the doctors at the hospital where I gave birth, the lack of awareness of this congenital birth defect and the lack of government structures put in place to strategically address this issue in children was heartbreaking for me, to say the least."
