Mrs. Maxine Askew Street
Mrs.Maxine Askew contributed 46 years of service to the South Ozone Park Queens Community. She was a loving, caring, and giving person. The true definition of a Pillar in the community. She operated a very successful Dance school that impacted hundreds of participants yearly from as young as 3 years old & up to grown adults. Some of the adults were once children in the dance school, & they brought their children to join the dance school, they grew up being a part of. The participants enrolled learned dances like Tap, Jazz, Modern, Hip Hop, & Ballet. It was a beautiful thing to see. It was like one really big family. The name of the dancing school was "Askew Dancers", and she referred to all of her dancers as "The Stars Of Tomorrow". Every year they would have a June recital & a Christmas show. In between that , the dancers also performed at a lot of community based events such ; The Rockaway Blvd. annual street fair, various block parties, park jams, sweet 16's, retirement parties, school assembly's, etc. They also competed in competitions, local talent shows, and a host of other events. Mrs. Askew worked and Volunteered at PS155Q, which was located directly across the street from her home. She started a Cheerleading team for the school, she coordinated bus rides & trips for the families in our community, and she babysat and cared for children who parents were hard at work. She opened her home to anyone in need of shelter, and feed any & everyone in need of a meal. She impacted so many people for so man years. Mrs. Askew was diagnosed with Diabetes and fought it for as long as she could. On Nov. 9th, 2020 she passed and was laid to rest on Nov. 17th, 2020. Although she's no longer with us in the flesh her spirit will remain with us forever. Help us to rename the street where she saved so many lives and cared for so many people. 130th St btwn. 115th ave & 116th ave should be called Mrs. Maxine Askew St moving forward. It's the least we can do for all that she's done for so many, This request will be submitted to The Traffic & Transportation Committee
