Divest Nebraska from Sudan
Nebraska Divestment Campaign to end the genocide in Darfur: Since early 2003, the government of Sudan has supported and participated in genocide against black Africans in the Darfur region. To date, an estimated 400,000 innocent civilians have perished, 2.5 million have been displaced, and countless women have been raped as a result of attacks by government sponsored militias and Sudanese troops. As residents of the State of Nebraska, we demand that the state divest from targeted companies that are providing revenue for genocide and providing little or no assistance to Sudanese civilians. The State of Nebraska legislature must immediately pass a bill requiring the divestment of public monies from the worst offending companies in Sudan, and the Governor must sign it so that economic pressure can be exerted quickly and effectively to bring peace and security to Darfur. This divestment strategy is being used as a last resort; the government of Sudan has been unresponsive to diplomatic pressure. It is our hope that this pressure will impact the Sudanese government\'s behavior in such a way that it will end its genocidal practices.
