New sports centre for Winchester and District
Let’s build Winchester’s Olympic legacy!
Winchester needs a place to play, a place to train, and a place to compete – a place that will inspire the whole community to engage in sport and experience its benefits. Current sports facilities cannot meet the needs of this vibrant and growing City or its broader District – we must improve provision now.
Proposals on how to do this have been developed by Winchester Fit for the Future, a voluntary group of sports stakeholders from Winchester and the surrounding area. These are set out at: www.fit4thefuture.org
Winchester should aim high – and the time to do so is now. The Olympic year offers the ideal opportunity to plan, and raise funds, for a new community sports and leisure centre that will help expand sports participation, support health and well-being, and develop local talent.
We, the undersigned, urge Winchester City Council and local partners to work together now, to plan for the construction and operation of a sustainable and accessible community sports and leisure centre that meets the relevant competition standards.
This petition has now been submitted to Winchester City Council.
We met our initial target of 100 signatures online in just over a week! During the Olympics, we got to 500! By the end of the Paralympics we had reached our next target of 750! By the time we submitted the petition to the Council, there were 857 signatures online - and 3334 in total. The petition was also endorsed by 14 top athletes andhigh profilelocal figures.
Thank you to all those who are supporting the petition - and our community proposals for a new sports and leisure centre.
This online petition will stay open so that people across our community can continue to show their support (and share their views via comments) if they wish. However, no further signatures will be printed and submitted to the Council.
