We successfully hit our goal and took a stand for the climate by keeping our planes on the ground. Check our Twitter page for updates on what comes next and keep holding the industry accountable for their emissions.

This campaign is inspired by the Swedish campaign #Flygfritt2019 organised by Maja Rosen and Lotta Hammar, which has already led to over 10,000 Swedish citizens pledging not to fly in 2019. English-speaking people on Twitter have asked how they can record their pledge -- this page is a means for them to do so. You can follow us on Twitter @FlightFree2019

Why flight free?

We need urgent action to mitigate the effects of the climate crisis. In its most recent report, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has warned that limiting global warming to 1.5°C will require "rapid and far-reaching" transitions. The consequences of failing to meet this target will be catastrophic.

Flying is a major source of CO2 emissions. If global aviation was a country, it would rank in the top 10 emitters. When the effect of releasing emissions at high altitudes is included, aviation is responsible for 5% of global human climate change impacts (Van Renssen, 2012). For many of us, not flying is one of the simplest ways that we can dramatically reduce our carbon footprint.

Please join us in pledging to be flight free in 2019!

The feedback coming in from people pledging to stay grounded is powerful. Message your local representatives to demand better train infrastructure because we need viable alternatives to air travel now. Post your own commitment on Facebook and tag our account to show others that a flight free year is possible.

I have not flown for some years. I have set my family a personal CO2 budget at a low level that will not destroy the planet. Flying is the one thing above all else that would destroy any possibility of keeping our carbon footprints to an acceptable level.

Travelling isn't a means to an end, getting there as quickly as possible, but a journey and adventure like life. Why not take it slower, get the ferry or the train. Explore your own country and invest in our own tourist industry here and help the young get work. Just a thought

With sleeper trains, it is possible, and even convenient, to travel in Europe without wrecking the climate ! More night train connections would help reducing the ecological disaster of aviation.

Flying as well as being damaging contributes to inequality A tiny minority of people take most of the flights but we all bear the environmental cost of their behaviour.

My philosophy degree told me that climate change doesn't matter because the identity of future people is undetermined. But my Christian faith tells me to love people, with a love which extends to my poor, global and future neighbours. I will never fly again.

I pledge not to fly in2019. For environmental reasons I have not flown since 2011. For the sake of my kids future this is not a hard thing to do. I am also following the other recommendations in IPCC report 2018 chapter 4 table 4.8. Let’s just all do all of this?
