My dream has always been to become a nurse practitioner specialized in mental health. However, this profession is not recognized outside Quebec in Canada. This situation affects not only my career aspirations but also the access to mental health care for thousands of patients across the country.
In Canada, approximately 1 in 5 people experiences a mental illness or addiction problem each year (source: Canadian Mental Health Association). Nurse practitioners specialized in mental health can play a significant role in providing accessible and effective care for these individuals. Yet, their recognition and utilization are limited to Quebec.
This lack of recognition from provinces restricts our ability as healthcare providers to serve our communities effectively and deprives many Canadians of essential services they need. It's time we change this.
We urge the relevant authorities across all provinces of Canada to recognize nurse practitioners specialized in mental health as legitimate healthcare professionals. By doing so, we will be taking an important step towards improving access to vital mental health services for all Canadians.

The volume of support has now reached a level that allows us to secure a formal meeting with provincial health policy advisors. My focus is shifting toward drafting the briefing package that outlines the legislative barriers to recognizing mental health nurse practitioners outside Quebec.

This is ridiculous. Mental health care is already so hard to find in Ontario and we need more options for people who need help now.
