Nygren Rd Against Cannabis Farm in Our Neighborhood
Hello Neighbors,
As many of you are aware, there is a application being processed by the County Planning Department for a cannabis farm in our neighborhood. Specifically, this would be located at end of Sutliff Road, directly adjacent to Camp Roberts. Some of the negative impacts of this operation on our neighborhood are:
1. Increased road traffic on Nygren Rd, Bridge Canyon and Sutliff Rd. The applicant estimates this grow site will add approximately 24 trips per day on our privately maintained road. The applicant is under no obligation to pay increased road fees or contributions to the Nygren Road Co-op as a result of this new business venture.
2. Increased dust and air pollution. The increased road traffic outlined above will increase the dust/pollens in the air along the entire length of our community. In their application, it is stated that the daily dust created with the additional road traffic exceeds county standards of what is deemed healthy and acceptable.
3. Decreased property values in the area. Realtor.com has published an article relating to cannabis and property values stating that the estimate in Colorado has been that home/property values decline approximately 10% when a cannabis farm is in the area. This is something that homeowners must disclose to any potential buyers of property in the area.
4. Potential for increase in crime. Having this large (2 acre) grow of cannabis at the end of our road could be a target for anyone looking to steal crops of this nature. As we have all seen, people get lost in our neighborhood and drive to the wrong house all the time. Imagine what could happen if one of these "wannabe criminals" drives up to your home, how would this put you and your family at risk?
5. Water concerns to the area. This project estimates the crop would need approximately 2 acre feet per year. All water is going to be pumped from our shared aquafer, meaning this will impact all of our water supplies. Many in our community are are already experiencing issues with our wells that require us to treat our water for high levels of arsenic. A new business pulling 650,000 gallons of water every year is only going to make this problem worse.
WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU
On February 8, there is a Planning Commission Meeting at 9am. We need as many residents as possible to attend to show our united opposition to this project. There is an opportunity to speak at the beginning of the meeting (each speaker is limited to three minutes). Speaking is not mandatory, but the option is available to everyone in attendance. If we can get enough community members to show up at the meeting, this will send a message to the Planning Commission, the Board of Supervisors, and the applicant that we are not interested in having a cannabis farm in our neighborhood.
PLEASE SIGN THIS PETITION TO INDICATE YOUR OPPOSITION TO THIS PROJECT. We want as many neighbors as possible to sign this petition opposing this grow. This will allow everyone to have a voice in this matter, even if they can't be at the meeting in person. If possible, sign the petition and come to the meeting. When signing the petition, please indicate in the notes that you are a resident who lives off of Nygren Rd.
