The state finally caved and reinstated the Rural Employment Services Program after months of ignoring our reality. We proved that New York farmers will not stand by while the Department of Labor botches our industry support. Stay vigilant because we are watching to make sure they actually staff these positions …

Dear Governor Cuomo,

Labor Commissioner Rivera,

NYS Assembly and Senate Agriculture Committees,

Senators Bonacic, Carlucci, Klein and Skelos and

Assembly Speaker Silver,

We, the undersigned farmers and members of the NYS agricultural community, respectfully request that the State of New York reinstate the NYS Department of Labor Rural Employment Services Program, and all of the NYS-DOL Rural Representatives employed in said program.

Agriculture is vital to the economy of our state, in many communities it is our largest industry. The support services that were previously provided by the Rural Reps were vital to the success of agriculture and farms across New York. Most notably, the original program provided experience and expertise with regard to matching farm-workers with farmers, maintaining good relations, and ensuring that all laws and regulations were being followed.

We maintain that the current NYS DOL Division of Immigrant Policies and Affairs / Agriculture Labor Program, which was formed in April 2012 to replace the Rural Employment Services Program, has proven ineffective and adversarial in providing needed services and assistance to both farmers and farm workers. New York farmers and farm workers need the old Rural Employment Services program back so that we can successfully maintain and grow our farm businesses and continue the important work of feeding New York and growing the New York State economy.

Governor Cuomo and the Department of Labor are ignoring our needs while our farms suffer. We are nearing 250 signatures and I need you to force them to pay attention by sending this link to three people right now. Let's make them see how many of us are fed up with their useless replacement program.

LEAVE THE FARMERS ALONE AND GIVE THEM THE SUPPORT THEY NEED TO KEEP WORKING.

These folks knew our operations inside out. You cant just replace that kind of local knowledge with a desk job in the city.

Ridiculous that they cut this. Farmers are struggling enough as it is. Bring back the rural reps!

My family has been farming in NY for three generations. We cant find reliable help anymore and the old program actually understood how farms work compared to the bureaucrats in Albany now.

Just another example of people who never stepped foot on a farm making rules for those of us who feed the state.

Without these services it is honestly a nightmare to navigate all the changing labor laws. We need the help back ASAP.
