The event has been successfully cancelled and our community concerns were ultimately respected. I am grateful to the 804 people who stood by this position throughout the process. We will remain attentive to ensure similar efforts do not find a foothold on campus in the future.

Dear All Chinese Students, (click here for Chinese version: http://www.nyuccc.org/news.htm ) The New Tang Dynasty Television (NTDTV), a mouthpiece of Falun Gong used for cult and anti-China propaganda, is organizing a so-called International Chinese Classical Dance Competition on July 5-8 2007 at Skirball Center for the Performing Arts at New York University. The Falun Gong organization is nothing but a cult, which preaches anti-humanity, anti-science and heretical fallacies and exercise extreme mental manipulation on followers. To protect the human rights of the general public in China, the Chinese Government outlawed Falun Gong. This was endorsed by all Chinese citizens around the world. However, this cult has found breeding ground in the United States. NTDTV, a self-claimed independent, non-profit Chinese language TV broadcaster, was set up in 2002. It is, in essence, a media tool used by Falun Gong organization to expand its influence and spread slanderous rumors against the Chinese Government. In recent years, NTDTV staged the so-called Chinese New Year Spectaculars in the name of showcasing the Chinese culture and the oriental charm. However, the programs were full of implied preaching of cult doctrine and attacks on the Chinese Government. They were an insult and distortion of the Chinese culture and a deception to the audience. And now, NTDTV conspires to infiltrate the student community by setting the stage of its dance competition at New York University. It even lists this information on the dance competition English website: Since Communist Party is outlawed in the United States, all songs and music that eulogize Communist Party will be prohibited during this competition. Contestants might want to send their dance music to the Judge Committee for assessment in order to avoid unnecessary problems. This is an open defiance, which sheds a very bad light on all Chinese students in NYU, and the whole Chinese students community in United States. We, Chinese Culture Club of New York University, decide to make a solemn protest. In the coming weeks, we are going to communicate with NYU officials through multiple channels, with the ultimate mission to prohibit the dance competition happening in our campus. Even if we fail the mission in the end, we must make our voice heard. Therefore, we need your support; we need to make our voice stronger. Please support us by going to http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/nyusayno to leave your name and message (both in English. School email is optional). We are approaching five hundred signatures and this momentum reflects a widespread commitment to addressing the nature of these events on campus. I ask that you reach out to three colleagues today to explain why this venue remains inappropriate for such propaganda. Establishing this critical mass is essential for the credibility of our concerns when we engage with administration.

The momentum behind this effort has shifted from a quiet concern to a clear collective stance. Seeing so many people recognize the implications of this event at our university is a testament to our shared values. This response confirms that we are not alone in questioning the presence of this organization on our campus.

Falungong incited other people who doesn’t know the truth to sign to accuse Chinese previous president and insulted human dignities. We must be avoid from them.

They always hide their true face behind dance and music. NYU should know better than to host this organization.

Falungong is a cult that brainwashes people. They just want to use art to spread lies about China. Stop them now.

This makes me sick. Why is NYU letting them use the space for their propaganda? Keep this trash off campus.
