Lower the Ontario Legal Drinking Age from 19 to 18
With the new 4-year Ontario curriculum, 17-18 year olds are expected to graduate from high school. Students are expected to leave home at a younger age and attend a post-secondary institution. As an 18 year old attending a post-secondary institution, you have all the responsibilities of adults. You pay bills, you live on your own, you make your own decisions yet the Ontario government sees 18 year olds unfit to make the choice to whether to consume alcohol or not. Currently in Ontario, the legal drinking age is 19, approximately half of all first year post-secondary students will be 17-18. Meaning that many mature young adults enrolled in post-secondary institutions will not be able to legally consume alcohol, a choice which they should be able to make. Currently in Ontario, 18 year olds are legally able to purchase pornography and are legally allowed to gamble, yet they are not able to legally purchase or consume alcohol. We the undersigned request provincial legislation for the legal age of alcohol purchase and consumption to be changed form 19 to 18.
