This year on the International Women's Day, we stand in solidarity with women's rights and other social activists in Iran, while rejecting the abduction of their struggles by "opportunist activism." We condemn U.S. interventionist policies against Iran that instrumentalize Iranian women's demands for equality as an excuse to escalate regime change efforts and to implement sanctions that cause misery for the Iranian people, women and men alike.

Many of us are political dissidents, who have paid dearly for our fight for democracy and the freedom of association and organization for women, students, workers, and minority groups in Iran. While reaffirming our opposition towards the ongoing human rights violations by the ruling regime in Iran, we principally stand against any form of staged agenda that appropriates our voices to justify the imposition of further sanctions or the use of any military force on Iran.

Since the early days of the current administration in the White House, a disconcerting coalition has shaped between long-time American warmongers (e.g. National Security Advisor J. Bolton and Secretary of State M. Pompeo) on the one side, and some renowned Iranian groups and "activists," e.g. the People's Mujahedin of Iran (PMOI or MEK), Iranian Liberal Students and Graduates, and the My Stealthy Freedoms Campaign on the other side. The U.S. government supports the activities of these groups, directly and indirectly, through such media platforms as the State Department-funded Voice Of America (VOA) Persian, or the Tavaana Initiative, funded partially by the U.S. National Endowment for Democracy (NED). These organizations use media platforms to depict a sympathetic stance towards oppressed groups in Iran, while at the same time advocate for hostile U.S. policies towards Iran, significantly worsening the conditions for marginalized groups in Iran, including women. We warn all activists, inside and outside of Iran, against the fundamental damages that opportunist activism of this sort can bring upon our struggles.

The most recent example of the efforts of such hired activists is that of Ms. Masih Alinejad, the host of the VOA Persian Tablet program and the founder of My Stealthy Freedoms Campaign, who met with the U.S. Secretary of State M. Pompeo on Feb 4, 2019. Representing herself as the voice of Iranian dissidents, Ms. Alinejad called upon the U.S. administration to help amplify the voices of the women and oppressed minorities in Iran, and asked the U.S. government to officially recognize the opposition. We believe this meeting was highly worrisome for the following reasons:

1. Despite the official claims that paint the U.S. foreign policy apparatus as protective of freedom, democracy, and human rights, it is no secret that American foreign policy has consistently privileged other priorities. While the U.S. atrocities in Iraq and Afghanistan were carried out under the pretext of promoting democracy and human rights in these countries, the current administration is led by a man who openly expressed disappointment with the U.S. leaving Iraq without taking its oil. By appealing to the warmongers in power, Ms. Alinejad at the very least ignores this hypocritical record and takes advantage of the current conditions in Iran to justify her support for yet another ill-intentioned intrusion.
2. The fact that the current U.S. administration has an untenable record on women's rights further discredits Ms. Alinejad's claims of fighting for women's rights. From denying reproductive rights to women, to several cases of sexual misconduct by the president, there is no room left for any illusion about this administration's intention for promoting women's rights.
3. In the aforementioned meeting, Ms. Alinejad presented herself as the voice of many who trusted her, and stated that the Iranian opposition should be recognized in any negotiations between the United States and Iran. It is obvious that legitimate representation of the Iranian opposition can only be recognized by means of democratic elections, and certainly not through social media accounts. Representation claims of this nature do no more than exploiting the Iranian people's discontent with undemocratic political processes.
4. At this crucial moment, when many feminists and other independent and progressive activists in the U.S. have created a powerful force against the pernicious attacks of the U.S. government against vulnerable groups nationally and internationally, Ms. Alinejad's meeting with Secretary Pompeo means nothing but distancing herself and her campaign from progressive forces, and thereby implying a conflicting link between a central women's rights issue and conservative U.S. politics.

We the undersigned hereby declare that the struggles of Iranian women for freedom and justice are not to be appropriated as a pawn for justifying the interventionist policies of the U.S. While we are adamant in the pursuit of justice for Iranian women, we condemn any women's rights or human rights activism that is funded by foreign governments and corporations with the goal of manipulating public opinion for foreign-backed "regime change" policies at all costs. No claims about human rights violations in Iran justifies the means of widespread economic, political, and psychological suffering due to sanctions, and life under a constant threat of violence and war.

امسال همزمان با روز جهانی زنان، ما امضاکنندگان این نامه همبستگی خود را با فعالان حقوق زنان و سایر فعالان اجتماعی در ایران اعلام میکنیم و همزمان بر مخالفت صریح خود با مصادره مبارزات مردم ایران از جانب کنشگران فرصت طلب تاکید میورزیم. ما سیاستهای مداخله جویانه ایالات متحده علیه ایران را که در پی سوء استفاده از خواسته های آزادی خواهانه و برابری طلبانه زنان ایران هستند محکوم میکنیم، و به شدت نگران گسترش دیدگاه هایی هستیم که سودای تغییر رژیم ایران با کمک دولتهای خارجی را در سر دارند.

بسیاری از ما منتقدان و معترضانی هستیم که برای مبارزات خود در جهت دموکراسی و حق تشکل یابی زنان، دانشجویان، کارگران و سایر گروههای ستمدیده در ایران بهای زیادی پرداخته ایم. ما در عین تاکید مجدد بر مخالفت خود با اشکال متفاوت نقض حقوق بشر از جانب حاکمیت در ایران، قاطعانه مخالف هر طرح برنامه ریزی شده ای هستیم که مبارزات ما و سایر مردم ایران را دستاویزی برای مشروعیت بخشیدن به اعمال خشونت سیاسی و نظامی علیه ایران قرار می دهد.

از ابتدای تشکیل دولت ترامپ، ائتلاف نگران کننده ای میان جنگ طلبان آمریکایی (جان بولتون مشاور امنیت ملی و مایکل پومپئو وزیر خارجه آمریکا) از یک سو، و برخی گروهها و «فعالان» ایرانی مانند سازمان مجاهدین خلق، دانشجویان و دانش آموختگان لیبرال، و کمپین آزادیهای یواشکی از سوی دیگر شکل گرفت. در این ائتلاف، دولت آمریکا به شیوه های مستقیم و غیرمستقیم و از طریق رسانه های تحت حمایت مالی خود (مانند بخش فارسی صدای آمریکا یا شبکه توانا) از فعالیت های این گروه ها پشتیبانی می کند. این گروه ها نیز در مقابل، و در حالی که مدعی همراهی و همبستگی با گروههای ستمدیده در ایرانند، از سیاستهای خصمانه آمریکا علیه ایران حمایت می کنند. در راس این سیاست ها تحریم های اقتصادی است که باعث افزایش فشار بر گروه های به حاشیه رانده شده از جمله زنان شده است. ما از این طریق به همه فعالان داخل و خارج ایران در مورد تاثیرات مخرب چنین کنشگری فرصت طلبانه ای بر مبارزات مردم در ایران هشدار میدهیم.

دیدار خانم مسیح علینژاد، مجری برنامه تبلت بخش فارسی صدای آمریکا و موسس کارزار آزادی های یواشکی، با مایکل پومپئو وزیر امور خارجه آمریکا در ۴ فوریه ۲۰۱۹ از جمله تازه ترین موارد چنین همکاری هایی است. خانم علینژاد که مدعی نمایندگی بخشی از ناراضیان ایران است، در این دیدار از دولت ترامپ خواست از زنان و اقلیتهای تحت ستم ایران حمایت کند و صدای آنها را به رسمیت بشناسد. ما این دیدار را به دلایل زیر نگران کننده میدانیم:

یک. به رغم ادعاهایی که می کوشند دستگاه سیاست خارجی آمریکا را مدافع آزادی، دموکراسی و حقوق بشر جلوه دهند، شواهد تاریخی گواه آنند که سیاست خارجی آمریکا همواره اولویتهای دیگری داشته است. در حالی که تجاوز نظامی آمریکا به عراق و افغانستان به بهانه پیشبرد دموکراسی و حقوق بشر در این کشورها صورت گرفت، رییس جمهور فعلی آمریکا خروج آمریکا از عراق بدون تصاحب نفت این کشور را مورد نقد قرار می دهد. خانم علینژاد با پذیرش دعوت جنگ طلبان در قدرت، در خوشبینانه ترین حالت این کارنامه ریاکارانه را نادیده گرفته و شرایط فعلی ایران را بهانه ای برای توجیه مداخله خارجی در ایران قرار داده است.

دو. آنچه ادعای خانم علینژاد را درباره مبارزه برای حقوق زنان بی اعتبارتر می کند، کارنامه غیرقابل دفاع دولت فعلی آمریکا در زمینه حقوق زنان است. با توجه به اقدامات دولت آمریکا در جهت محدود کردن دسترسی زنان به روش های پیشگیری از بارداری و موارد متعدد سوء رفتار جنسی رئیس جمهور آمریکا با زنان، جای شگفتی است عدهای برای حل مشکلات زنان ایران به چنین دولتی امید بسته اند.

سه. خانم علینژاد در دیدار با وزیر امور خارجه آمریکا خود را صدای زنان ایرانی که به او اعتماد کرده اند معرفی کرده و اظهار داشته که صدای مخالفین جمهوری اسلامی باید در مذاکرات بین ایران و آمریکا به رسمیت شناخته شود. بدیهی است نمایندگی مخالفین صرفا از طریق انتخابات دموکراتیک مشروعیت می گیرد، و بی شک فعالیت در شبکه های مجازی اجتماعی چنین نمایندگی را به خانم علینژاد نمی بخشد. علاوه بر این، هر گونه ادعای نمایندگی از این دست درعمل تنها سوء استفاده از نارضایتی های ایرانیان از روندهای سیاسی غیردمکراتیک است.

چهار. در شرایط سیاسی امروز که بسیاری از کنشگران فمینیست و سایر فعالان مستقل در آمریکا برای مقابله با سیاستهای زیانبار دولت متشکل می شوند، دیدار خانم علینژاد با وزیر امور خارجه آمریکا معنایی جز فاصله گرفتن او و کارزار مورد حمایتش از این نیروهای مترقی ندارد.

ما امضاکنندگان این نامه تاکید میکنیم که هیچکس مجاز نیست مبارزات زنان ایران در راه آزادی و عدالت را دستمایه توجیه سیاستهای مداخله جویانه آمریکا قرار دهد. ما در عین دفاع سرسختانه از تلاشهای زنان ایرانی برای دستیابی به برابري، هر سازمان حقوق بشری را که با حمایت دولتها یا شرکتهای خارجی در پی سوء استفاده از افکار عمومی برای مشروعیت بخشی به مداخله خارجی باشد محکوم میکنیم. ما معتقدیم نقض حقوق بشر در ایران به هیچ روی تحمیل فشارهای اقتصادی، سیاسی و روانی بر ایرانیان و دامن زدن به تحریم، خشونت، و جنگ را توجیه نمی کند.
