Southampton Solent University is introducing open plan rooms beginning June 2015 without consultation with academic staff. We the undersigned believe this plan to introduce a 'call centre' environment to be counter to the interests of academics and students for a number of reasons including loss of privacy, scholarly activity, academic-student engagement for both academic and personal issues, lack of space to store books and journals, lack of space to store student material and more. This move is counter to proper 'pastoral care' that the VC Graham Baldwin championed in a recent podcast.
