Black roads absorb heat from the sun making hot days even hotter. Painting the roads white will reflect the sun and reduce the amount of heat absorbed. White roads can reduce the ground temperature by more than 20°F. Not only will white roads impact the area, but it will also impact the earth. Painting roads white will reduce the amount of green house gasses and offset the growth in carbon dioxide emissions. Not only does it help the environment, it will increase the visibility of roads at night. There is no need to tear up the road either, roads could easily be painted or chalked over to make them white. Dark roads only reflect about 10-20% of sunlight, while white surfaces tend to send back at least half. The roads don't even need to be white, they just need to be a light color, like gray or white. White roads won't reverse the effect mankind has had on the earth, but it's one step closer to making the world for our future generations a better place to live.
