Permission to Play Poker in the IBCR
The DCB year 13 community is writing to express our concerns regarding the recent decision to prohibit poker games in the IB common room. We understand that rules and regulations are essential to maintaining a conducive learning environment, but we would like to respectfully request a reconsideration of this particular restriction.
Poker has become a cherished tradition in the IB common room at our school, and it holds significant value for us for several reasons:
Social Bonding: Poker games provide us with an opportunity to socialize, connect, and form lasting friendships. It's a way for us to relax and unwind after a challenging day of classes and extracurricular activities. These connections are invaluable as we prepare to graduate and embark on different paths in life.
Life Skills: Poker teaches us valuable life skills such as critical thinking, strategic planning, risk assessment, and emotional control. These skills are not only essential for our academic success but also for our personal and professional growth in the future.
Stress Relief: The IB is undeniably stressful as we grapple with college applications, exams, and the impending transition to adulthood. Poker has been a healthy outlet for stress relief, helping us manage our anxieties and maintain a balanced approach to life.
Most importantly we want to communicate, socialize, and integrate between the 2 year groups like last year rather than staying in already established groups and staring at our phones for the whole lunch.
We genuinely believe that the benefits of allowing poker games in the IB common room outweigh the potential drawbacks. To address any concerns, we are willing to establish clear guidelines and ensure responsible behavior during these gatherings. We are committed to maintaining a respectful and harmonious atmosphere within the common room.
