Petition for Academic Remediation
We, the undersigned students of the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG), are deeply distressed by recent tragic incidents on our campus. These events have exposed critical flaws in our academic policies, leading to excessive academic and career pressure. We strongly petition for changes to these policies to prevent further tragedies and ensure a more supportive academic environment.
Background
Recently, two of our fellow students tragically took their lives, allegedly due to, but surely contributed by the intense pressure caused by academic failures:
- Saumya: Failed a course by a small margin, resulting in the revocation of her Pre-Placement Offer (PPO).
- Bimlesh: Failed a course due to slightly insufficient attendance. This prevented him from appearing for most companies during the internship season.
In both cases, no summer term courses were offered to help clear their backlogs before the crucial internship and placement seasons, exacerbating the pressure and leaving them with few options. Additionally, clearing their backlogs during the regular semester leaves them little to no time to prepare for internships and placements.
We hope the administration will recognize the gravity of this situation and take immediate steps to address our concerns. We urge the administration to engage in constructive dialogue to resolve these issues in a timely and compassionate manner.
