Subject: Petition for Enhanced Safety Measures to protect our CPS Bus Aides and Bus Monitors.

This petition is being circulated to bring to your attention a critical safety issue I recently encountered while performing my duties as a bus aide. On May 31, 2024, I was dropped off on Damen and Van Buren by my driver because he had a charter to attend to. Shortly after being dropped off at this location I was robbed.

This incident has caused me significant stress and anxiety. It has also highlighted the urgent need for enhanced safety measures to protect bus aides and monitors. It’s very critical that these concerns be addressed immediately and promptly to ensure that such events do not occur again. Ensuring all employees feel safe and secure while fulfilling our responsibilities.

I am petitioning for the implementation of the following safety measures:

1. Designated Drop-Off Points:

Ensure that bus aides are dropped off only at safe, predetermined locations that are safe and secure.

EX: Partner with CPS Schools across the city to arrange pickup and drop off points/locations.

2. Escort Protocol:

Implement a protocol ensuring that bus aides are never left alone at any location, and arrangements are made for safe transportation to a secure place, prior to the driver's departure.

3. Driver Training:

Provide training for bus drivers on safety protocols and the importance of ensuring the well-being of all bus aides and monitors.

4. Communication systems:

Ensure everybus aid has a communication device, i.e phones, radios.

5. Incident Reporting:

Establish an efficient process for reporting safety incidents. Ensuring that immediate actions are taken. Including notifying all bus aids about the incidents that have taken place.

6. Safety Checks:

Conduct regular safety audits of incidents and locations to identify and mitigate potential risks.

7. Emergency Response:

Develop and communicate a comprehensive emergency response plan with procedures on what should happen in case of emergency.

The immediate implementation of these safety measures will ensure a safer working environment for all employees. I am requesting that a between Chicago Public School and SEIU Local 73 takes place immediately to ensure these measures are in place before the start of the upcoming school year!

Thank you all for your attention to this critical matter. We all look forward to your prompt response and implementation of the enhanced safety measures.

In solidarity,

Yolanda Mcgrone
