Petition for Equitable & Transparent Hiring Practices in Bethel
Due to the lack of transparency in hiring practices at the administrative level, we, employees of the Bethel School District, petition to:
- Rescind
- the appointment of Mel Boyd to the created position of "Senior Director" of Transportation
- the $20,000 "grandfathered" salary bonus above the current Director of Transportation salary
- Open the position of Director of Transportation to ensure a fair and equitable process is followed when hiring administrative positions.
- Have the Director of Transportation remain under the auspice of Maintenance and Operations.
- Follow standard hiring practices and compensate positions equitably.
Information to the best of our knowledge:
March 12, 2024 - Mel Boyd resigned effective July 1, 2024
March 26, 2024 - Ms. Boyd read a statement at the school board meeting admitting to committing an Unfair Labor Practice during the PSE negotiations during the 22-23 bargain.
May 28, 2024—Director Camacho called out Ms. Boyd's appointment to a position for which she has no experience. After explaining her reasoning, Director Camacho was adamantly opposed to the appointment.
May 28, 2024—The school board voted 3 to 2 to support Tom Seigel's appointment of Ms. Boyd to the Senior Director of Transportation position. This appointment included a new title and a $20,000 pay increase above the current Director of Transportation salary for the same work.
BEA questions the change in title of the Director of Transportation position and the accompanying $20,000 salary increase. The person appointed has questionable integrity, and the change of the supervising department from Maintenance and Operations to Human Resources raises ethical questions.
