Honourable Chief Wayne Pamajewon and councillors of Shawanaga First Nation.

We the off reserve members would like to put forth this petition that we as members of Shawanaga First Nation should also be allocated a Christmas Gift of 400 dollars per household and a voucher for a Turkey for our Christmas dinner. It is stated that in order for us off reserve members to collect this gift and turkey voucher, we must travel home and attend the community Christmas party.

We, the off reserve members do not feel this is fair. As I know many of us would love to attend and join in the festivities and also visit with our family and friends but travel to and from Shawanaga in the middle of winter on a week night when people have to work and attend school is just not feasible, and can also be potentially life threatening in bad weather conditions.

Many of us off reserve members struggle during the holidays, not just to provide gifts for little ones who still believe in Santa Claus, but to put food on our tables or pay bills. There are young parents who will pack up their little ones and brave treacherous weather and put their lives in danger just to collect the 400 dollars, in order to give their little ones a good Christmas.

This is not fair at all, it's actually sad. The money that is given out at Christmas, to the best of our knowledge, comes from the Casino Rama OLG funds which is allocated to Shawanaga First Nation based on total membership whether we be living on or off the Rez. Therefore we should be included in recieving benefits from these funds. It's wrong that the 150 members living on shawanaga get to reap benefits from these funds which are allocated based on our nation as a whole, with approximately 500 of us living off Rez receiving nothing.

We would like to put forth that we are able to have our Christmas money and turkey voucher sent to us in the post, rather than driving for 5 or more hours during a week night in the middle of the winter.

Please know that we as off the reserve members are not trying to be confrontational, nor are we in any way trying to slight chief and council by bringing this forth. We just feel left out and feel we are being treated unfairly.

All for one and one for all, or none for all.

ONLY REGISTERED MEMBERS MAY SIGN

Thank you very much for your time in this matter

Sincerely;

Your off reserve members of Shawanaga First Nation

Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays

I AM READING THROUGH EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOUR COMMENTS AND THE STORIES OF STRUGGLE ARE ABSOLUTELY HEARTBREAKING!! IT IS CLEAR THAT SO MANY FAMILIES ARE BEING FORCED TO CHOOSE BETWEEN SAFETY AND PUTTING FOOD ON THE TABLE DURING THE HOLIDAYS!! WE ARE KEEPING THE MOMENTUM GOING UNTIL THE LEADERSHIP TAKES RESPONSIBILITY FOR ALL MEMBERS REGARDLESS OF WHERE WE LIVE!!

November 28, 2015

THE MOMENTUM BEHIND THIS MOVEMENT IS ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE!! SEEING SO MANY OF YOU STAND UP FOR WHAT IS RIGHT HAS LEFT ME FEELING TOTALLY INSPIRED!!

If the funds are based on full membership numbers council is and should be morally obligated to make decisions that fairly and equally benefit the full membership. To put people in a position where they put their own safety at risk is an irresponsible decision on the part of the decision makers. What if the party providing the funds put attendance or any other conditions on their release of it? why is there no accountability for these funds? As an off-reserve member, this is the first time I have even heard of this. Comments on here are well written and I appreciate being able to read and understand a bit more about SFN. Thank you.

All members should be treated equally and fairly when gifts are given. If we are counted and you leave off reserve members out then where has that money gone. There are many families and seniors that would and could give their families a better Christmas if we received the same Christmas bonus. Thank you.

My name appears on the band list and I am proud to have it there. Do not discriminate against me, for you are the blood of my blood, the sorrow of my mothers heart and the despair of a broken promise. Break the chain, nourish my soul, care for me. Just like my grandparents and your grandparents did for each other in their time of need. Many a night as a child I went to bed with hunger as a blanket and tears as a pillow. Don't let this happen to our community both on the fez or off. Sharing and caring makes us stronger as a nation.

I feel we should be aloud to receive to said things. I don't have the ability to just up and travel for a mid week party that is roughly 500 miles from where I currently live with my family so that a 1000 mile round trip just there and back. My daughter is a member and my son will soon be a member. Love my community and family there but I had to Pursue a life that was gonna benefit me for the best. Knew where my addiction to alcohol was gonna lead me and did not want that. Gave up all of what I new and loved to make a better life for myself.

I will sign this, not on my behalf, but on the behalf of my grandmother, who as far as I know has never been able to attend this, and could use the additional money.

The completely absurd conduct of allocating community gifts only to on reserve residents from moneys received for band membership total numbers is not only outrageous it has to be legally irresponsible. To be present for a few hundred dollars and a turkey the size of a chicken is NOT worth the drive for many many off reserve band members. The KEY word here is BAND MEMBERS! If our vote is a right then the money received on our behalf is certainly OUR RIGHT. Making rules based on personal gain for a small percentage of band members does not demonstrate true leadership and respect for ALL band members. I have never supported discrimination against any Band member and feel this petition is founded in the basic principal of fairness and equality for all Band Members both ON and OFF reserve.

K,I here over and over again when it comes to trying to improve things.WHY CAN,T WE JUST LEAVE IT ALONE,IT,S BEEN THAT WAY FOR YEARS! ...come on it,s 2015! baby steps damn it! Change it to a SAT.! Driving up there is very enjoyable for me.I live in Whitby ,ON.I take 12,bypass Orillia, then 11 to Huntsville, then 148 across to the new 400.Usually takes about 2.5 hrs on a GOOD DAY! There have been times when it,s taken me 4.5 hrs to get home and actually wondered if I,d make it home! Mother Nature can get damn snarly to put it mildly! Those snow squalls come out of nowhere and to continue driving is just plain stupid.Driving at night is bad enough! I drive a Nissan Pathfinder and it,s amazing in the snow. But when you can,t see 5ft in front of you,you have NO time to react to someone in your lane coming straight at you.Do we have to wait until someone gets seriously hurt or killed! SATURDAY! Let me have an opportunity to spend some quality time with my family/friends for the whole WEEKEND!.......Merry Christmas to all and the very best wishes for the New Year!
