Petition to Convert the Scheduled Live Coding Session on 4th December to an Assignment-Based Format
We, the undersigned students of MSc Computer Science 2023/24, are writing to request a reconsideration of the format for the upcoming live code session scheduled for the 4th of December.
As students eager to excel in our studies and improve our understanding of Python and coding principles, we have found the current structure of the course challenging, especially for those of us who are newer to these concepts. The feedback from the student body indicates a significant level of discomfort and lack of confidence in undertaking a monitored, in-person coding assessment under the current circumstances.
Our concerns are primarily rooted in:
Limited Exposure to Practical Independent Assignments:
Many of us feel that we have not yet had sufficient opportunity to apply our learning in practical, independent scenarios, which is crucial for building confidence and skill in coding.
Course Structure and Organization:
The changes within the course, as perceived by several students, has added to the uncertainty and unease about performing under time constraints in a live setting.
Given these considerations, we respectfully propose that the live coding session be converted to an assignment-based format. This alternative would allow us the flexibility to apply our learning over a span of a few days, enabling a more thorough demonstration of our understanding and skills. We believe that this format would not only be more conducive to our learning but also more reflective of our true capabilities in computer science.
We appreciate the efforts put into structuring this course and understand the importance of assessments in gauging our progress. We hope that our request will be considered favourably, keeping in mind the collective goal of fostering a more effective and supportive learning environment.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. We look forward to a positive response and are open to discussing this further if needed.
Sincerely,
Students of MSc Computer Science
